The Needs of Children in Colombia

For more than four decades, Colombia has been embroiled in an armed conflict which has cost many thousands of lives and caused the displacement of an estimated three million persons.

Tragically, children are severely affected by the devastating consequences of forced displacement and poverty. Often, their mothers are forced to leave them at home without any protection or care. Many children suffer from malnutrition, physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and preventable diseases.

Project Activities

Every child needs attention and a loving home. Thanks to Hogares Bambi Colombia (HBC), vulnerable and abandoned children have access to a safe home with professional care and attention. HBC's program is based on a comprehensive assistance model aimed at protecting disadvantaged children and providing them with love, safety, and treatment underpinned by a human rights perspective. HBC’s interdisciplinary team of experienced caregivers and medical professionals meet all of the children's needs.

Our Partner

HBC is a Colombian nonprofit organization that cares for vulnerable and abandoned children under the age of seven and works to protect their rights. Children sheltered at HBC have been exposed to drug use, physical violence, sexual abuse and other conditions related to extreme poverty. Most are also victims of displacement as a result of the internal conflict.

Where appropriate, HBC is committed to returning children to their parents. To do so, it provides parents with job training and access to microcredit so they can generate income and successfully care for their children. It is the only organization of its kind in Colombia that provides such services to parents. For orphans and children who cannot return to their homes, HBC’s staff works with the Colombian authorities on an adoption program.

To date, it has helped more than 8,500 children in its eight foster homes in Bogota, Cali, Medellín, and Darien.
