Colombia’s Housing Needs
Colombia’s rural areas have been devastated by over 40 years of armed conflict. Thousands of civilians have been killed and 2-3 million individuals have been displaced.
With little government support and no income or savings, displaced families have no other option but to rent tiny rooms or build precarious shacks using discarded materials. Access to affordable housing will help Colombia’s neediest families rebuild their lives.
Project Activities
Servivienda offers affordable housing, access to financing, and community development programs to families living in substandard conditions. The majority of households are headed by women.
At an average price of $2,200, the homes are sturdy and attractive. The prefabricated construction makes the houses affordable and easily expandable as the families’ economic situation improves.
Servivienda will identify 24 families living in substandard conditions and determine their housing and financing needs. It will provide technical assistance for the construction of homes, offer loans, and collect monthly payments, maintaining a 90% minimum repayment rate. Its staff will provide technical assistance and ongoing support services.
